Fluoxetine HCL? Is 20MG of Fluoxetine twice daily a large dose of Fluoxetine HCL? Any info would be helpful.

Julie L replied: "I think that is Prozac and no, that is not a large dose but the normal adult daily dose is 20 mg once a day."

OliveRuth replied: "nope..sounds pretty typical to me..give yourself some time to get used to it..can take several weeks for it to "work...so be patient"

BugGurl replied: "No, it is an average dose. Check drugs.com, webmd.com, etc."

jennifer replied: "ummmm your doc didnt give you something to start your period, he gave you an antidepressant. it also helps with severe pms"

mdizzy18 replied: "PROZAC Lilly Fluoxetine Use: SSRI. Depression: patients > 18 years of age - Initially, 20 mg in the morning; increase dosage gradually only after a trial period of several weeks if required. Maximum: 80 mg/day. Elderly patients: 20 mg/day. Use lower or less frequent dosage in patients with renal and/or hepatic impairment and those receiving multiple medications. When switching patients to a TCA, the TCA dosage may have to be reduced and plasma TCA concentrations may need to be monitored temporarily when fluoxetine is co administered or HS recently been discontinued. Bulimia nervosa: Adults, 60 mg/day. Assess electrolyte levels prior to starting therapy. Obsessive-compulsive disorder: 20 - 60 mg/day. Prozac's long-term efficacy in bulimia (i.e., > 16 weeks) and in obsessive-compulsive disorder (i.e., > 13 weeks) has not been evaluated in controlled trials... You might want to get that checked out it says it is Prozac. I looked it up on google and it said it on all the medical websites. Generic for it. It is for mental health."

Fluoxetine versus Fluoxetine HCL? My pills changed, so I looked on the website and it said that the dosage was the same, but one was fluoxetine, and one was fluoxetine hcl. I didn't know there were 2 different kinds - what is the difference and is one preferred?

dwp_hornblower replied: "They are the same. The HCL is just a more specific term and has to do with the molecular structure of the drug. There should be no differences. The pills changed probably because the pharmacy got a supply from a different manufacturer. However, to be sure, I would ask your pharmacist."

i forgot to take my fluoxetine hcl (prozac) yesterday? Is that really bad? I feel ok 2day and have taken my dose for today, its not a big thing is it? Nothing bad is going to happen is it? ive lost the leaflet from my pack so i cant check, thanks for your answers if you know anything about this x

jackie replied: "No. That will happen every once in a while, just take it as soon as u realize you missed unless its time to take your next dose in which case dont take the older dose at all."

Nikki replied: "It's best to call a Pharmacist and ask them whether you should take it or not. Nothing will happen to you if you missed your dose. It's just that you are supposed to stay on a regular schedule."

Mr Man replied: "you feel ok so your ok. simple lol its defo not a big thing"

gracie replied: "I think you're ok since you went right back to taking it. You did the right thing. Here's information from drugs.com: What happens if I miss a dose? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. If you miss a dose of Prozac Weekly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember and take the next dose 7 days later. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled weekly dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed.Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. davetrader replied: "You are in luck. Prozac is not the type of medication that must be taken strictly at the same time and every day without fail in order to work. Do you remember how when you first started the drug, it took a few weeks to really kick in? Likewise, prozac takes a few weeks to completely leave your system. If you miss a day, chances are that you won't be affected at all. However, if you miss several days, or take it irregularly, it won't be fully effective. In short, you're fine if you miss a day here or there. You shouldn't double-up to make up for it."

ali b replied: "do not warry, no harm at all it may be good as the drug is accumalative and has effect on all the systems, do not overdose or take 2 . just take regular dose in the next day .wish you good helth and good mode."

I am suffering from depression.my doctor prescribed me fluoxetine Hcl tablets one tablet daily.? I want to know whether these tablets have severe side effects or not.those who have used these tablets or sertraline Hcl please share their experience.and also tell me how long they used it to completely cure the depression . please answer

Stephen O replied: "I've taken Prozac (fluoxetine hcl). Initially you may feel a bit more nervous or fidgety than usual, possibly have trouble sleeping for a night or two, but these side effects go away in a week or two. Prozac helped with depression, definitely, but it is not a cure. In my case, it gave me enough energy and hope to work through my issues. Good luck. You might have a look at the Merck manual online, or Wikipedia for more information."

LINDA R replied: "Your doctor should tell you what the side effects are, but he may not be able to tell you how long you will need to take the medication, because everyone is different."

Fluoxetine hcl (prozac) and hair loss? Ive heard you can have hair loss while on prozac. Has anyone experienced this? And is it total hair loss or just a few strands or general thinning of hair? And does it affect your eyebrows, eyelashes etc???

isleofskye replied: "I took prozac for about 12 months and experienced no hair loss"

ElectronProbabilityCloud replied: "I've not heard that one. It can make you sweat more than you used to though."

kezza replied: "i lost quiet a bit of hair while on fluoxetine but nothing noticeable to any one else only me while brushing or washing my hair"

angel_of_thought replied: "I was on Prozac for nearly a year and I didn't suffer any hair loss."

casinoreverend replied: "woooo...this is one side effect you dont hear of much. I work with the chronic mentally ill and most of them hardly notice any hair loss. Upon further inspection, part of the side effect profile lists alopecia--hair loss. Ive seen one client that has complained of hair falling out, and she described it as slow hair loss over time, not in clumps and not effecting brows or lashes. I would describe it as general thinning of the hair, if you have started prozac recently it might be worth trying a reasonable alternative (paxil, zoloft, etc) Prozac has been out for years, studied extensively, has little adverse effects on general population, cheap to make and has been proven to work!"

Sian replied: "I didn't even realize that this could be a side effect of fluoxetine. I know 4 or 5 people besides myself who have been on prozac and to my knowledge none of them have experienced this side effect. I took it for 5 years and didn't suffer any hair loss. It could be quite a rare side effect in which case I would try not to worry about it too much."

Angle replied: "I was on Fluoxetine(Prozac) for many years and never suffered any side affects"

[niki] replied: "i actually lost LESS hair while on prozac."

Alfirin06 replied: "I've been on it for several months now and I haven't noticed any at all. All I got was nausea and some weight loss in the beginning. All the side effects really depend on the individual, the ones they list in the leaflet are all the ones they've ever heard of but some people never get any."
